“All phenomena that appear to my mind are the nature of my mind. My mind is the nature of emptiness.”
Geshe Kelsang Gyatso, Modern Buddhism
In the previous two series we have been exploring and meditating on the conventional nature of the mind. In this series we will be exploring the ultimate nature of the mind. Emptiness.
Emptiness does not mean nothingness. Rather, in the case of the mind, emptiness means that the mind is empty of, or lacks, a specific fixed nature. Understanding and then meditating on the true nature of the mind, is the most liberating experience we can have.
At the moment, so many of us feel stuck in very ordinary ways of thinking and being. We don’t want to be depressed, or anxious, or insecure. We want to change our way of thinking about things but feel we can’t. By coming to understand the emptiness of the mind we learn that in fact there is no ‘stuck’ mind. Its actual nature is freedom and boundless possibility. Tuning into this freedom in meditation brings about a radical letting go of our self-limiting habits and opens us up to the potential for freedom from even the most deep-seated challenges. Emptiness allows us to understand how permanent liberation from suffering and enlightenment is possible.
Everyone is welcome. Please join us.
