3-WEEK REFUGE RETREAT WITH GUEST TEACHER, KADAM LUCY

According to Buddha’s teachings, known as Dharma, suffering arises not from external conditions themselves but rather from how we respond to them. Suffering arises from the mind and therefore to protect ourselves from suffering we need to learn to train our mind by taking Buddha`s teachings to heart and applying them to our own lives.

If we are to have lasting success in this training we need to decide to fully engage in this process. We can find protection from the suffering of this life and our future lives by going for heartfelt refuge in the practice of Dharma. This in turn depends upon our trust in the teachings and blessings of Buddha and the support and friendship of Sangha, the spiritual community. This refuge in Buddha, Dharma and Sangha or the Three Jewels, is what characterizes the Buddhist approach to life.

In January 2025, guest teacher Kadam Lucy will lead a three-week preliminary guide retreat on the practice of Going for refuge. For those who are interested, this is an opportunity to collect 100,000 refuge mantras "I and all sentient beings until we achieve enlightenment go for refuge to Buddha, Dharma and Sangha," in order to complete the first of the four great preliminary guides (see The Oral Instructions of Mahamudra for more details).

30 years ago, at Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso’s request, Kadam Morten arrived in America and began teaching Kadam Dharma in a graffitied dance studio in the Bowery. This was the first time the Modern Buddhist teachings presented by Geshe-la were taught in New York City.

And just look at where we are now! We have an extraordinary City Temple with over 500 monthly members and more than 50 teachers contributing to our packed program which regularly serves 1,000’s of New Yorkers with the methods for developing authentic inner peace and happiness.

All of these wonderful developments have only arisen thanks to the collective efforts of so many members and friends. And of course, in particular through the generosity of donors like you to our KMC NYC Year-End Campaigns. Thank you!

Now we are on to the next 30 years and there is so much more to accomplish. We suspect you will agree that New Yorkers are in as much need now of real inner peace and happiness as ever, if not more so.

The funds raised this year will go towards providing our present branches (in Williamsburg, Harlem, Queens, Upper West Side, Noho, Riverdale, and Jersey City) as well as our future branches, in locations to be determined, with the resources they need to make a real impact in their communities.

We also plan to tend to many practical needs, such as purchasing new, more comfortable chairs for our meditation room and, of special importance to all of us, enabling us to hold the line on affordable class fees which in turn makes Buddha’s teachings available to the greatest number of practitioners.

And if all that weren’t motivation enough for you, a very generous member of KMC NYC has offered to match up to $250,000 of others’ donations, doubling the value of (and merit accumulated by!) your generosity! A $100 donation is $200 for our Campaign.

Even with the extraordinary efforts of our devoted managers and army of energetic volunteers, KMC NYC could not have succeeded without the financial support of others, such as you. We thank you for your ongoing support.
