Venerable Geshe-la, the Author

Venerable Geshe-la’s first book, Meaningful to Behold was published in 1980, and since then he has authored more than 20 additional authoritative books and composed over 50 sadhanas. These are now offered in many different languages, giving people everywhere access to the path to enlightenment.

Venerable Geshe-la’s books are not ordinary books. Geshe-la has said "my books are commentaries to Lama Tsongkhapa’s teachings and his teachings are commentaries to Buddha`s teachings. So these books are Buddha’s teachings." In Joyful Path of Good Fortune, Geshe-la writes of Je Tsongkhapa "If we were to study his works we would be astounded by their clarity and beauty, and we would understand that they are the works of a realized Master who has written honestly and sincerely about his own experiences." When Geshe-la writes, he is sharing his realization of Buddha’s wisdom, writing with the same clarity and beauty as Je Tsongkhapa. In this way, he is transmitting a living lineage of instruction, adapting ancient Buddhist wisdom for the modern world.

If we take any of the advice we find in Venerable Geshe-la’s books to heart, it will transform us.

While Geshe Kelsang Gyatso formally retired from teaching in 2009, he continues tirelessly to write new books and update previous ones.

Venerable Geshe-la, the Visionary

Venerable Geshe-la came to the West by invitation to teach at Manjushri Institute in Ulverston, England. He arrived in August 1977 and gave his first teaching on the Stages of the Path, Lamrim on September 10th of that year.

Since then, he has worked tirelessly to establish a modern presentation of the Kadampa Buddhist lineage.

Some of his incredible accomplishments include:

Transmitting the essential teachings of Buddha’s Sutras and Tantras in a presentation that retains all the meanings and insights of Buddha’s original instructions, in a format that is accessible and suitable for modern day practitioners.

Establishing more than 1,400 Buddhist centers, and branches throughout the world, enabling people everywhere access to the Buddhist spiritual path.

Developing retreat facilities in many countries including International Retreat Centres in Spain, Germany, Switzerland and the USA.

Training hundreds of modern Kadampa Teachers and developing special programs for their continued training and support.

Founding the International Temples Project with a vision to develop a modern Buddhist Temple in every major city of the world.

Inaugurating an annual program of International and National Festivals and Dharma Celebrations.

Creating three study and meditation programs - the General Program, Foundation Program and Teacher Training Program.

Composing 23 highly acclaimed books on Buddhism and meditation that are published internationally in many languages.

Designing the Kadampa Art Studio to make qualified statues for modern Kadampa Temples and centers around the world.

Through his great kindness, everyone – regardless of nationality, culture, age or gender – now has the opportunity to practice scientifically proven methods for solving daily life problems and finding true and lasting happiness.

CELEBRATING THE LIFE OF VENERABLE GESHE KELSANG GYATSO RINPOCHE

In Celebration of Venerable Geshe-la`s birthday today, we are going to share a series of posts showcasing some of his remarkable accomplishments that have contributed to the flourishing of Modern Kadampa Buddhism throughout the world.

Venerable Geshe Kelsang’s birthday falls auspiciously on June 4th, Turning the Wheel of Dharma Day, and for hundreds of thousands of people throughout the world, he turns the Wheel of Buddha`s teachings for them.

Thank you, Geshe-la from the depths of our hearts, for your great service that has given all of us a path to inner peace and authentic happiness, and finally to full enlightenment.
__________

Venerable Geshe-la, the Yogi

Venerable Geshe-la’s life story is one of a modern day mahasiddha; a Tantric yogi.
From the age of 8, he studied extensively in the great monastic universities of Tibet, eventually earning the title ‘Geshe’ which means ‘spiritual friend’.

After many years of formal study and under the guidance of his principal Spiritual Guide and mentor, His Holiness Kyabje Trijang Rinpoche, Geshe-la went on to spend an astonishing 18 years in solitary meditation retreat in the Himalayas and later, the mountains of northern India.

In 1987, ten years after arriving in England, he embarked on a three-year retreat at the first International Kadampa Retreat Center, Tharpaland.

It is of no surprise that in all of his teachings, Venerable Geshe-la emphasizes the importance of meditation practice and retreat, as instrumental tools for gaining spiritual realizations and finally the attainment of enlightenment. Although he engaged in extensive solitary retreat, in his Modern Buddhist presentation he shows how we can attain profound realizations through simply combining our daily life with daily meditation practice and occasional retreats.
