A Special Opportunity to Fill Your Mind with Merit!

Geshe Kelsang defines merit as "the good fortune created by virtuous actions" (Joyful Path of Good Fortune)

Over the summer months our Foundation and Teacher Training Programs take an extended break. For this reason, we are seeking help with the management of our daily water offerings in our two meditation rooms.

Making offerings to the Buddhas is extraordinarily meritorious! In Joyful Path of Good Fortune, Venerable Geshe-la writes:

If we offer water to represent the seven offering substances, and if the water we offer has eight good qualities, we experience eight special benefits: (1) Offering cool water causes us to develop pure moral discipline. (2) Offering delicious water ensures that we will always find delicious food and drink in future lives. (3) Offering light water causes us to experience the bliss of physical suppleness. (4) Offering soft water makes our mind calm and gentle. (5) Offering clear water makes our mind clear and alert. (6) Offering sweet-smelling water brings easy and powerful purification of negative karma. (7) Offering water that is good for the digestion reduces our illnesses. (8) Offering water that soothes the throat makes our speech beautiful and powerful.

If you`d like to commit to helping over the summer months please connect with [email protected] who can share more details and also supply training.

Venerable Geshe-la, the Architect and Artist

In order to give people everywhere throughout the world access to Buddha’s proven methods for attaining peace and happiness, Venerable Geshe-la has also established the International Temples Project (ITP).

Already, this project has constructed five World Peace Temples, in England, New York, Brazil, Portugal, Spain and Arizona, with one in France to be opened next. These Temples are built largely by Kadampa builders and volunteers according to Venerable Geshe-la`s design, which is based on the exquisite mandala palace of Buddha Heruka.

Temples are extraordinary statements of beauty and meaning, and every aspect of their design teaches the spiritual path. They are adorned with exquisite art work and have shrines containing breathtaking, authentic Buddhist statues. These statues and artwork are designed and produced in the Kadampa Art Studio by trained volunteer artists.

Each year tens of thousands of people visit Kadampa Temples and centers. Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso Rinpoche has said that anyone who sees a Temple or the holy objects within will receive a special blessing that sows the seeds of future peace and happiness in their mind.

Venerable Geshe-la, the Author

Venerable Geshe-la’s first book, Meaningful to Behold was published in 1980, and since then he has authored more than 20 additional authoritative books and composed over 50 sadhanas. These are now offered in many different languages, giving people everywhere access to the path to enlightenment.

Venerable Geshe-la’s books are not ordinary books. Geshe-la has said "my books are commentaries to Lama Tsongkhapa’s teachings and his teachings are commentaries to Buddha`s teachings. So these books are Buddha’s teachings." In Joyful Path of Good Fortune, Geshe-la writes of Je Tsongkhapa "If we were to study his works we would be astounded by their clarity and beauty, and we would understand that they are the works of a realized Master who has written honestly and sincerely about his own experiences." When Geshe-la writes, he is sharing his realization of Buddha’s wisdom, writing with the same clarity and beauty as Je Tsongkhapa. In this way, he is transmitting a living lineage of instruction, adapting ancient Buddhist wisdom for the modern world.

If we take any of the advice we find in Venerable Geshe-la’s books to heart, it will transform us.

While Geshe Kelsang Gyatso formally retired from teaching in 2009, he continues tirelessly to write new books and update previous ones.

CELEBRATING THE LIFE OF VENERABLE GESHE KELSANG GYATSO RINPOCHE

In Celebration of Venerable Geshe-la`s birthday today, we are going to share a series of posts showcasing some of his remarkable accomplishments that have contributed to the flourishing of Modern Kadampa Buddhism throughout the world.

Venerable Geshe Kelsang’s birthday falls auspiciously on June 4th, Turning the Wheel of Dharma Day, and for hundreds of thousands of people throughout the world, he turns the Wheel of Buddha`s teachings for them.

Thank you, Geshe-la from the depths of our hearts, for your great service that has given all of us a path to inner peace and authentic happiness, and finally to full enlightenment.
__________

Venerable Geshe-la, the Yogi

Venerable Geshe-la’s life story is one of a modern day mahasiddha; a Tantric yogi.
From the age of 8, he studied extensively in the great monastic universities of Tibet, eventually earning the title ‘Geshe’ which means ‘spiritual friend’.

After many years of formal study and under the guidance of his principal Spiritual Guide and mentor, His Holiness Kyabje Trijang Rinpoche, Geshe-la went on to spend an astonishing 18 years in solitary meditation retreat in the Himalayas and later, the mountains of northern India.

In 1987, ten years after arriving in England, he embarked on a three-year retreat at the first International Kadampa Retreat Center, Tharpaland.

It is of no surprise that in all of his teachings, Venerable Geshe-la emphasizes the importance of meditation practice and retreat, as instrumental tools for gaining spiritual realizations and finally the attainment of enlightenment. Although he engaged in extensive solitary retreat, in his Modern Buddhist presentation he shows how we can attain profound realizations through simply combining our daily life with daily meditation practice and occasional retreats.
