A Life Beyond Fear
One night only at the Town Hall Theater, New York City

Is a life beyond fear even possible?

According to Buddha, fear arises from how we respond to our environment not from the environment itself. The fear and anxiety that we experience is therefore not inevitable.

Through the practice of meditation, we can learn to work skillfully with our fear. Instead of allowing it to overwhelm us, we learn to redirect it, so that it moves us towards developing those states of mind that naturally give rise to peace, confidence and a strong sense of purpose.

Based on her nearly 40 years of experience of meditation, Buddhist nun Gen-la Kelsang Dekyong, senior disciple of the great Buddhist teacher, Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso Rinpoche and Spiritual Director of the New Kadampa Tradition, will guide us into recognizing our potential for a meaningful and joyful life truly beyond fear.

Special Advice of the Wisdom Buddha: The Four Conditions for Realizing Emptiness

The great Buddhist master Je Tsongkhapa once had a vision of the Buddha of Wisdom Manjushri. In this vision, Manjushri explained to Je Tsongkhapa the four special conditions needed to be able to gain an actual realization of the ultimate nature of reality, known as emptiness. In this half day course Kadam Morten will explain these four conditions. He will guide meditations on emptiness and show how to integrate these supporting conditions into our everyday life.

The teaching on emptiness is the central insight of the Buddhist spiritual path. Deepening our experience of emptiness will help us in every part of our life, enabling us to make great spiritual progress, actualize our highest potential and be of great benefit to others.

We begin at 4:30pm with a Wishfulfilling Jewel & Tsog puja; involving chanted prayers and meditation. Through this practice we deepen our experience of meditation and our connection to joyful and empowering blessings. You may bring an offering of vegetarian food or non-alcoholic drink if you wish.

Afterwards, we all head out to our community table to enjoy each other’s company as well as the offerings and any items brought by our community for the potluck.

As with everything we do at our center, our parties are also run by volunteers. If you would like to contribute in some way to help make the night a success, please get in touch with Alexis via [email protected]

Half-day course this Saturday, with Natalia Darialova: Learn the Fundamentals of Buddhist Meditation

If you are curious about the very basics of Buddhism – what is it? how might it apply to your life? – and you also wish to either learn about meditation in general or improve on your current meditation practice, join us for our monthly Fundamentals of Buddhist Meditation course where we will lay it all out for you.

Session 1: Introduction to Buddhism 10:00 – 11:30 am
In Part I of the course you will learn the fundamentals of Buddhist view and how applying these insights in your daily life will increase your ability to navigate relationships skillfully, remain calm even in the face of turbulence, and to enjoy a deeper sense of well-being and happiness.

Session 2: Introduction to Meditation – a Workshop 12:15 – 1:30 pm
In Part II we will explain the basic nuts and bolts of meditation, from why we would want to meditate to the “technical” matters of how to do it. What do we focus on? How long do we meditate? What are some techniques to help us overcome distractions? We guarantee you will emerge from the Workshop a wiser and more skilled meditator!

The workshop includes guided meditations and plenty of time for questions.
