How to Be a Bodhisattva

Friend of the World

Wouldn’t it be wonderful to be fully invested in our lives, to live passionately? Often, we think this will entail a change of job and circumstance, but what if all it required was a shift in attitude and intention? Within the practice of Buddhist meditation, the best role model for the most meaningful, joyful, and fully engaged life is the Bodhisattva.

A Bodhisattva is someone who, out of love and compassion for absolutely everyone, seeks to attain enlightenment, knowing that only by attaining enlightenment can they truly protect their family, friends, and finally, all living beings, from suffering.

All of us possess the potential for enlightenment. The key to actualizing that potential is to begin training in the special loving intention of a Bodhisattva and to engage in the special attitudes and practices of a Bodhisattva. These are known as the Six Perfections. By engaging in these practices and integrating them into our lives, we become ‘trainee Bodhisattvas’. All it really takes is a shift in intention. Over time, we will find ourselves becoming more and more familiar with this beautiful and meaningful approach to life, and our lives will become a joyful path to enlightenment.

Teri will set us up for this course by guiding us in generating the special mindset of a Bodhisattva. Then, each week, we will focus on and explore – and meditate on – one of the six perfections.
