The Way of the Bodhisattva - The Meditations on Training in the Six Perfections

This class is offered in person only

A Bodhisattva is the Buddhist role model for how best to live in the world. And we can become one ourselves.

According to Buddha, our real purpose in this world is to attain enlightenment. Why? So that we can fulfill our compassionate wish to free others from suffering. A Bodhisattva is someone who has awoken to this higher purpose and now practices joyfully to transform the circumstances of their life into the path to enlightenment for the benefit of all.

In this series we will learn how to adopt mindset of a Bodhisattva. We may feel ourselves to be far removed from the altruistic mindset of Bodhisattva right now, but there is nothing to stop us from becoming a ‘trainee’ Bodhisattva, and beginning to move our life in the direction of the Bodhisattva’s way of life, simply by bringing that mindset to the things that we do.

In particular we will look at how to integrate the six main practices of a Bodhisattva, known as the six perfections, into our activities and way of being. By training in this we begin to taste the extraordinary beauty and benefits of the Bodhisattva right now.

NEXT SERIES

The Liberating Wisdom of Emptiness

The next meditation in this series is the one that all the previous meditations in our ongoing Sunday series on the Stages of the Path have been leading up to: the meditation on emptiness.

According to Buddha, the root cause of our suffering is our ignorance of, and subsequent misapprehension of, how things actually exist. We perceive phenomena as existing entirely independently of the mind, and it is this mistaken apprehension that gives rise to all attachments and aversions that generate our unhappiness.

In reality things are empty of being independent of the mind. It is through understanding this emptiness that we begin to undermine all the unhappiness in our minds and lives. Gradually, through gaining deep experience of emptiness in meditation, we can actually purify our minds completely and eventually eradicate even the root cause of our suffering.

What could be more exciting than coming to understand the true nature of all things? And then to discover that this insight will actually remove all our unhappiness and make our lives inexpressibly joyful, creative and meaningful?
